BSI Insights: Security for 5G networks

A particularly important future topic for the BSI is a securely designed 5G/6G infrastructure in Germany. To fulfil this cyber security goal, the BSI is active in Freital as a competence centre for 5G/6G in the areas of standardisation, specifications for certification and the creation of model security concepts.

Action description

Public mobile networks of the 5th generation are subject to legal regulations, in the development and updating of which the BSI is involved. The IT Security Act 2.0 gave the BSI, as the national cyber security authority, the task of auditing operators of public telecommunications networks and providers of publicly accessible telecommunications services with increased risk potential every two years. In addition, the competence centre is also responsible for the technical specifications for the legally required certification of critical components in the public mobile networks with increased risk potential.  In the area of private 5G networks, too, new requirements are arising for companies, authorities, research institutions and other operators.

The BSI is addressing the question of how 5G networks can be operated securely and, with IT-Grundschutz, is using a proven and recognised tool for the establishment and operation of an information security management system.
