The cyber threat landscape is evolving unabated, representing new challenges for security professionals within all organizations. As IT professionals, we have to be aware of these threats.

From our Mandiant Incident Response Investigations team we have seen some key indicators in the last 12 months.

Whilst the overall dwell time has reduced over recent years there is still plenty of time for attackers to embed themselves into systems and move laterally within an organization before discovery.

Whilst the number of ransomware attacks has increased, this is not the only threat that organizations face with IP theft and influence operations becoming more prevalent.

Detection from externally is the primary source of notification. Organizations are struggling to keep up with their defenses and early recognition of breaches.

Attackers are working harder to hide their activities helping them spend more time within organization’s systems.

The commercialization of malware and specialization is leading to an exponential growth in the number of attackers.

Insider threats are a growing problem.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used for both good and bad in cybersecurity. AI can be used to detect and prevent attacks, but it can also be used to create more sophisticated attacks.
